Jest to jeden z pierwszych rockowych albumów wydanych w formacie CD. Został nagrany w studiach nagrań Air Studios na Montserrat, Air Studios w Londynie i w Power Station w Nowym Jorku. W trakcie nagrywania tej płyty grupę opuścił drugi gitarzysta Hal Lindes, dlatego wszystkie partie gitarowe zostały nagrane przez Marka Knopflera. Na pierwszym singlu wydano piosenki "So Far Away" i "Walk of Life", dotarł on do 20. miejsca na listach przebojów w Anglii. Album ukazał się 17 maja 1985 i natychmiast uzyskał status "platynowej płyty" (tylko dzięki zamówieniom jeszcze przed pojawieniem się płyty), był to pierwszym album w Anglii który dostał "platynową płytę" już w przedsprzedaży. Wszedł na pierwsze miejsce listy przebojów 25 maja i utrzymał tę pozycję przez 3 tygodnie (17 czerwca pierwsze miejsce zajął album Bryana Ferry'ego Boys and Girls, na którym na gitarach grał Mark Knopfler). Dwie piosenki z Brothers in Arms zostały użyte w serialu Miami Vice - "Brothers in Arms" w odcinku pt. "Out Where the Buses Don't Run" i "Ride Across the River" w "Knock" . Utwór "Brother in Arms" wykorzystano również w kanadyjskim serialu "Na Południe" w 3 odcinku 3 serii. Piosenka "Brothers in Arms" została także wykorzystana w serialu Prezydencki poker (The West Wing) - w nagrodzonym nagrodą Emmy odcinku "Two Cathedrals" oraz w filmie pt. Zawód Szpieg (Spy Game) z Robertem Redfordem w roli głównej a także w filmie What Just Happened z Robertem De Niro.
